A TikTok trend is sparking an essential conversation: if you were lost in the woods, would you rather encounter a man or a bear? Some are expanding the question to include factors like gender and race.

I won’t tell you my answer yet because I want you to sit with the question. However, consider the reasons behind your choice.

  • Does it shift based on different circumstances?
  • Have you explored the perspectives of those with different experiences?

This thought experiment can also be applied to those creating freelancing or small businesses.

Diversity and Inclusion

Your work environment may be small, but it should foster respect and belonging for everyone. Freelancers and colleagues you collaborate with must feel valued and safe regardless of background.

Customer Perceptions

Clients should be treated equally, regardless of demographics. Aim to understand their needs and concerns rather than rely on assumptions.

Building Trust

Creating a safe and inclusive atmosphere is vital. This applies to client relationships and any collaborations with fellow freelancers.

While there may have been times when I would have chosen the bear, both in the woods and business, I strive for a different perspective now. I am always willing to learn from others’ experiences and build inclusive and welcoming spaces.

They say life begins at 40, but I’m proof it gets even better at 60—because thriving doesn’t have an age limit, and neither does dreaming big.
